Escapee Skylar Meade Pleads Guilty to Idaho Inmate’s Hospital Escape Plan

Boise, Idaho – A recent development in the case of an Idaho inmate who escaped custody from a hospital in March after a violent incident with corrections officers has brought new charges. Skylar Meade, the inmate in question, appeared in court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to escape. Despite entering this plea, Meade still faces the potential of additional charges that could further extend his sentence, including two felony enhancements.

The violent altercation occurred on March 20 at a Boise hospital as officers from the Idaho Department of Correction were preparing to return Meade to prison following medical treatment for injuries. During the incident, Nicholas Umphenour allegedly shot two corrections officers, resulting in a third officer being inadvertently injured by friendly fire. Fortunately, all three officers survived the ordeal.

After the attack, Meade and Umphenour fled the hospital, embarking on a journey to different parts of Idaho before being apprehended the next day in the southern region of the state. Umphenour now faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery on law enforcement officers, as well as aiding and abetting escape by using a firearm during the crime. While he has not entered a plea yet, a hearing is scheduled for later this month to address his case.

Additionally, Meade is also confronted with felony enhancements for his alleged involvement in causing injury to two of the officers during the incident. Court documents indicate that these enhancements will be discussed at a hearing set for June 20. As of now, Meade has not formally responded to these additional allegations. Both defendants’ legal representation has remained tight-lipped about the ongoing legal proceedings.

The sentencing for Meade is scheduled for July, with the potential of a life sentence looming over him. The case continues to unfold as legal teams navigate the complexities of the charges against both defendants, seeking justice for the officers involved in the violent escape attempt.
