Fatal Akron Shooting at Street Party Leaves 1 Dead, 24 Injured: Police Seek Suspects

Akron, Ohio – Law enforcement officers in Akron, Ohio are currently investigating a street party shooting incident over the weekend. Authorities suspect that the gunfire, which left one person dead and 24 others injured, was initiated by at least one individual firing from a vehicle at the crowd.

The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, resulted in the discovery of over 35 shell casings scattered across the block where the shooting took place. The party, attended by more than 100 people celebrating a birthday, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy. Police Chief Brian Harding mentioned that two handguns were found at the scene and indicated that some attendees may have fired back at the vehicle involved in the shooting.

As of Sunday night, no suspects had been identified in connection with the shooting. In a plea for information, the mayor and police chief urged any witnesses to come forward. To encourage cooperation, rewards totaling $22,500 have been offered for details leading to an arrest by the Summit County Crime Stoppers, U.S. Marshal’s Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

“The sheer number of victims is shocking and disconcerting. I want to be very clear: Anyone who was involved in last night’s shooting will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Mayor Shammas Malik affirmed in response to the tragic events. The deceased individual was identified as 27-year-old Lateris Cook from Akron, according to the county medical examiner. The wounded individuals, ranging from 19 to 43 years old, included at least two who were in critical condition.

Prior to the shooting, officers had responded to noise complaints at the party but were unable to disperse the crowd effectively. Despite the attempt, the gathering continued with over 200 attendees, some of whom were setting off fireworks. This ultimately led to the tragic turn of events that unfolded later in the evening and into the early hours of Sunday.

Addressing the importance of accountability in light of the violence, Mayor Malik emphasized the necessity of ensuring community safety. The mayor’s sentiment reflects the urgent need to address escalating incidents of violence and maintain a sense of security within neighborhoods and communities.
