Fatal Indianapolis Shooting Leads to 70-Year Sentence for Armed Robbery

Indianapolis, Indiana – Tavon Macklin, an Indianapolis man, has been sentenced to 70 years in prison for his involvement in a fatal shooting during an armed robbery on the city’s southeast side in 2021. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced the sentencing on Thursday, revealing that Macklin received the lengthy prison term in connection to the death of 27-year-old Justin White.

Macklin’s sentence stems from his conviction on charges of two counts of murder, attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. The jury found him guilty after a four-day trial in Marion Superior Court 28.

In addition to the 70-year sentence, Macklin will also serve time consecutively for a previous 58-year sentence related to another murder case involving 52-year-old Eugenio Roman in February 2021. Macklin’s co-defendant, John Ziegler, also pleaded guilty to murder and will serve 45 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, along with additional felony cases unrelated to the murder.

The fatal incident occurred when Macklin and Ziegler attempted an armed robbery on White and another individual at a gas station. White was shot multiple times by Macklin as he tried to escape in a vehicle. Detectives identified Macklin and Ziegler as suspects with the help of tips from the community and surveillance footage from the gas station.

Prior to the fatal shooting of White, Macklin had violated his home detention related to a previous armed robbery conviction. He later engaged in a shootout with IMPD officers while being apprehended on multiple felony warrants, during which he fired at officers and was struck in return.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears denounced the violent acts committed by Macklin and Ziegler, emphasizing the importance of accountability for those who pose a threat to the community. The prosecutors worked diligently to bring justice to the victims affected by these senseless crimes.

The sentencing of Macklin serves as a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice and safety for the residents of Indianapolis, marking a crucial step in holding accountable those who perpetrate violence in the community.
