BRIDGETON, NJ – A New Jersey father lost his life while attempting to defend his teenage daughter from individuals who were once family friends, authorities announced.
Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office has filed homicide charges against Eric Hannah, 55, and his 17-year-old son, J.H. They stand accused of killing 54-year-old Louis “Gus” Serbeck during a violent confrontation that unfolded last Sunday.
The incident allegedly began after Serbeck and his daughter went to the Hannah residence, intending to address an alleged assault that Serbeck’s daughter faced at the hands of J.H. the previous day. According to prosecutors, the meeting quickly escalated into violence, resulting in Serbeck’s death.
On Saturday, Serbeck’s daughter was allegedly attacked by J.H., sparking the visit to the Hannah home on Easter Sunday. The confrontation turned physical at the front door when J.H. allegedly responded with aggression, leading to a deadly encounter.
Prosecutors reported that during the altercation, J.H. suffered facial injuries and subsequently attacked Serbeck using a metal baseball bat, striking him multiple times in the head. Hannah allegedly joined in, delivering a blow to Serbeck with a flashlight. Additionally, Serbeck’s daughter reportedly sustained injuries from J.H.
Emergency services transported Serbeck to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries en route.
Both Hannah and his son were arrested shortly after the incident. Hannah faces charges including homicide, aggravated assault, conspiracy, and weapons offenses, and he is being held without bond in Cumberland County Jail. J.H. is charged with homicide and weapons offenses and is detained in a juvenile facility. It remains undecided whether he will be tried as an adult.
In connection with the alleged attack on Serbeck’s daughter, J.H. also faces aggravated assault charges.
The shocking event shattered what was once a close bond between the two families. Christopher Serbeck, Louis’ younger brother, expressed disbelief over the turn of events, noting that Hannah had been a lifelong friend of their family.
The investigation continues as the community grapples with the tragedy, reflecting on the unforeseen break in these familial ties.
