Auckland, New Zealand – A shocking incident at Auckland Prison’s high-security Paremoremo unit has resulted in the extension of sentences for Mongrel Mob member Taneti Karaitiana and his accomplice Moataane. The brutal attack in 2023 left fellow inmate Tear Euini severely injured after being stabbed multiple times in the head and neck. The violent assault, part of a gang-related revenge plot, unfolded in two back-to-back assaults captured by CCTV cameras in the prison’s exercise yard. Despite monitoring, prison staff did not intervene during the 30 minutes between the attacks.
Karaitiana and his co-defendants – including Moataane, Moses Hurrell, and Larren Rapatini – were accused of participating in the assaults. Karaitiana confessed to punching and kicking Euini while another inmate allegedly used a shank to stab the victim repeatedly. The violent nature of the attack left Euini bleeding heavily from his injuries, requiring medical attention for wounds to his neck, back, and shoulders.
Following the disturbing incident, Euini was again targeted by Moataane and Rapatini, who punched and restrained him against a wall. The relentless assault continued with all five defendants stomping on Euini’s head and torso. Despite his efforts to break free, Euini was eventually rescued by corrections staff. Subsequent court proceedings revealed the extensive criminal histories of Karaitiana and Moataane, emphasizing their high risk of re-offending and continued loyalty to gang culture.
In light of the defendants’ violent pasts, Judge Dawson handed down significant sentences to Karaitiana and Moataane, acknowledging their prior convictions for violence. Karaitiana faced up to 14 years in prison for wounding Euini with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while Moataane received a two-year starting point sentence for his role in the second attack. The judge noted the defendants’ troubled backgrounds and substance abuse issues, but ultimately found no compelling evidence of genuine remorse or willingness to change their criminal ways.
Despite the defense’s arguments for leniency based on remorse and rehabilitation efforts, the judge remained unmoved, deeming the defendants’ actions incompatible with true repentance. The case underscores the ongoing challenges posed by gang-related violence and the significant impact of repeat offenders on communities.
