Girlfriend jams screwdriver up nose of Houston man on crutches during argument

HOUSTON, TX – A late December night turned deadly on Houston’s northeast side when a confrontation between a young couple ended in violence, according to authorities.

Police said Jayla Brown, 22, now faces a murder charge after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend, Keylan Foreman, 21, during a heated argument that escalated into tragedy. The incident unfolded just before midnight on Dec. 27 at the junction of Lockwood Drive and Laura Koppe Road, an area typically winding down at that hour.

Officers responding to a 911 call discovered Foreman unconscious, slumped in the backseat of a vehicle. According to first responders, the young man had sustained several stab wounds to his head and face. Paramedics rushed Foreman to a hospital in critical condition, but he died the following day as a result of those injuries.

Investigators quickly identified Brown as the vehicle’s owner. She, along with other individuals who were present, initially told officers at a separate location that Foreman had simply been found bleeding in a parking lot after what they described as a disturbance.

However, the account soon shifted. Days after the fatal confrontation, Brown walked into the Northeast Patrol Station and provided a different version of events. In a written statement to detectives, Brown admitted wielding a screwdriver against Foreman during an argument — an act she said followed an altercation between the couple inside and outside her car.

Details from the police affidavit revealed that the pair had been exchanging words while seated in the car. Brown reportedly stepped out, made her way to the driver’s side, opened the door, and, mindful that Foreman was on crutches due to a prior injury, called for him to exit. The argument apparently continued on the sidewalk. Brown stated that Foreman hit her in the face during the dispute, prompting her to lash out. She told police she only regained her senses after witnessing Foreman bleeding profusely.

Brown recounted, in her statement, that her reaction to being struck was immediate — a claim that would later be scrutinized by investigators, especially after surveillance footage from a nearby business surfaced. The video, reviewed by detectives, allegedly shows Brown launching a sudden attack on Foreman, repeatedly striking him while he attempts to move away. Police noted that at no point did the footage appear to show Foreman responding physically.

Forensic evidence would ultimately support the account of a forceful and concentrated assault. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s autopsy found that Foreman had sustained a traumatic brain injury and skull fracture. The injuries were consistent with an assault using a screwdriver, according to the report. The medical examiner characterized the death as a homicide.

The investigation into the moments leading up to the stabbing remains ongoing. Police have not disclosed whether there had been prior reports of violence between the couple or whether other factors may have contributed to the altercation.

Brown remains in custody without bond. A court appearance has been set for Wednesday, where the case is expected to proceed as prosecutors review the evidence gathered by police.
