Gunman Shot by NYPD After Targeting Innocent Bystanders in Brooklyn

New York Police fatally shot a 20-year-old man in Brooklyn on Monday after officers reported he was walking around and shooting at people. A 19-year-old was taken into custody overnight for questioning, with charges pending, according to the NYPD. The incident unfolded just before 6 p.m. within a two-block radius, culminating on East 57th Street near Remsen Avenue in East Flatbush.

In response to three separate calls, officers from the 67th Precinct sprang into action, investigating reports of a dispute, a man armed with a gun, and shots fired at Linden Boulevard and East 57th. Witnesses at the scene, including Jada Babb and Maya Babb, described hearing multiple gunshots ringing out in rapid succession before the arrival of law enforcement.

Chief of Patrol John Chell detailed the swift response of officers who spotted the male suspect chasing another man and woman while firing numerous rounds at them. In a decisive move to neutralize the threat, officers swiftly intervened and fatally shot the suspect. A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered at the scene, with no prior arrests reported for the deceased gunman.

Tragically, a 60-year-old bystander sustained injuries in the crossfire, having been struck by stray bullets during the incident. The victim, hit in the arm and stomach, is expected to recover. An unmarked NYPD vehicle sustained damage during the confrontation, though no officers were injured. Chell commended the officers for their bravery, highlighting their quick response in protecting the lives of two civilians.
