HARTFORD, CT – Following a violent attack on state Representative Maryam Khan during a Muslim prayer service at the XL Center, Hartford police recently disclosed the outcomes of an internal affairs investigation into the incident. The incident, which occurred last year, involved 30-year-old Andrey Desmond allegedly attempting to sexually assault and strangle Khan, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.
In response to the attack, Khan expressed frustration over the lack of immediate assistance from security or law enforcement during the incident. Subsequently, she called for a thorough investigation into how the Hartford police handle cases of sexual assault involving women, prompting the initiation of an internal affairs inquiry.
Upon the release of the investigation’s findings, Hartford Police Chief Jason Thody acknowledged that there were discrepancies in the initial report filed by one of the responding officers, which were later rectified. However, the allegations against the responding officers were ultimately deemed baseless. The inquiry also suggested that one officer undergo retraining in report writing.
In a separate development, footage obtained through a Freedom of Information request depicted the moments after bystanders intervened to aid Khan. The video showed Jason Spencer engaging physically with the attacker, resulting in Spencer’s arrest for assault. Despite this, Spencer later received accelerated rehabilitation and had his charges dismissed through the legal process.
In a statement issued in response to the report, Khan emphasized the need for enhanced security protocols to ensure the safety of all citizens and emphasized the importance of handling cases of assault and sexual violence with utmost discretion and compassion. She expressed disappointment over the handling of her case but reiterated her commitment to working collaboratively with the Hartford Police Department to improve public safety measures.
Overall, the incident involving Representative Maryam Khan shed light on the challenges women face in cases of assault and the importance of effective law enforcement response and victim support mechanisms in ensuring justice and safety for all.
