Hell’s Kitchen, New York City – The victim of a brutal hate crime bravely shared her story as her attacker faced sentencing in court. Vilma Kari, 68, was viciously attacked by 43-year-old Brandon Elliot on a Hell’s Kitchen sidewalk in March 2021. After pleading guilty to first-degree assault as a hate crime and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Elliot was sentenced to 15 years in state prison.
Emerging from the courthouse, Kari expressed her desire to focus on her healing. While she has physically recovered from the assault, she continues to work on her mental and emotional well-being. At Elliot’s sentencing, Kari, who is Filipina, delivered a poignant victim impact statement recounting the harrowing experience she endured that day.
Surveillance footage captured Elliot kicking Kari to the ground, then repeatedly striking her as he uttered hateful remarks. Two doormen witnessed the attack but did not intervene until after Elliot had fled the scene. Subsequently, they were terminated from their positions a week later.
Despite her physical healing, Kari still grapples with fear when venturing outside. She remains cautious and unsure of when she will feel truly free again. Kari’s daughter, Liz Kari, has been a pillar of support, assisting her in the recovery process and founding an organization dedicated to combatting hate crimes against Asian-Americans.
The White House has taken notice of Kari and her daughter’s efforts, recognizing their courage and the impact of their advocacy. Through their work, Kari hopes to inspire other victims and individuals living in fear to know they are not alone in their struggles.
