Indidan woman leaves her newborn 9-day-old baby and her 1-year-old home alone to go to the bar then wrecks her car

MUNCIE, IN – Police responding to reports of crying children made a harrowing discovery: two infants left alone in their home while their mother was behind bars following a traffic accident.

The situation unfolded in the early hours of March 12 when officers responded to an accident at a Muncie intersection, where they found Sandra Henriquez, 32, allegedly impaired behind the wheel. Upon questioning, Henriquez initially claimed she had no dependents despite a car seat in her vehicle.

Later, at the Delaware County Jail, Henriquez revealed that she had children but was unwilling to disclose her home address, complicating the situation for law enforcement. Meanwhile, neighbors reported hearing cries from Henriquez’s home, prompting officers to investigate.

Upon entry, the police discovered a 1-year-old and a 9-day-old baby in dire conditions, wearing heavily soiled diapers. The newborn showed alarming signs of malnutrition with blue extremities and lips, while the older child appeared in better health. Both infants received immediate medical attention, with the newborn requiring a feeding tube.

Inside the residence, authorities also discovered open beer cans and a caged dog without food or water, adding to the home’s concerning state.

By the afternoon, Henriquez had been transferred to a criminal division for an interview. She allegedly confessed to leaving the children home unattended after a night of drinking at a local bar following earlier consumption of beer.

Now facing a slew of charges, including neglect resulting in serious bodily harm and obstruction of justice, Henriquez remains in custody at the Delaware County Jail with bail set at $42,500.

The incident raises disturbing questions about child welfare and the responsibilities of caretakers under the influence, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and law enforcement readiness in safeguarding vulnerable populations.
