Providence, Rhode Island — Five days have passed since a fatal shooting at Brown University left two people dead and nine others injured, yet authorities remain unable to identify a suspect, causing unease within the campus community.
Rhode Island investigators have intensified their efforts, releasing a photo of an individual believed to have been near their primary person of interest at the time of the incident. This update follows the dissemination of enhanced CCTV footage showing a person dressed in dark clothing walking near the university two hours before the shooting occurred.
Officials have been actively canvassing neighborhoods for home security video footage in hopes of piecing together the critical moments leading up to the attack. They are urging the public to come forward with any information that might aid in the investigation.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez addressed the community, stating the released image is of someone who may possess valuable information regarding the case. Meanwhile, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha assured residents that law enforcement is making progress, emphasizing confidence that the shooter will be apprehended in due time.
Questions have surfaced regarding the university’s security measures, particularly the absence of cameras in strategic locations that could have captured images of the shooter. A university representative defended the institution, stating it has approximately 1,200 security cameras throughout the campus and is cooperating fully with authorities.
As the investigation evolves, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley reported that some victims have been discharged from medical care, though six individuals remain hospitalized. At a recent news conference, police unveiled footage of a man who appeared to be surveying the area prior to the shooting, with a black mask covering his face and a hat obscuring his identity.
The police chief noted the individual’s behavior suggested he was “casing” the area, a tactic often employed by criminals. Perez requested that residents examine the footage for any familiar traits, including the person’s gait, and check their own cameras for evidence.
Despite ongoing efforts, investigators confirmed that the attacker was not recorded by any CCTV systems inside the building where the shooting took place, which was filled with students preparing for exams. So far, officials have not disclosed any information regarding a possible motive or whether the assailant targeted specific individuals during the attack.
In response to the alarming incident, police visibility has significantly increased at the Ivy League campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Authorities have assured the public that there are currently “no credible, actionable, specific threats” in the area.
Mayor Smiley characterized these heightened law enforcement efforts as a precautionary measure aimed at restoring a sense of safety in the community, reinforcing the idea that the well-being of residents remains a top priority.
