Jailed: Two Men Sentenced After Brutal Street Attack in Lancaster

Lancaster, England — Two men have been sentenced to prison for their roles in a brutal street attack that left a man seriously injured. The violent incident occurred on January 2, 2024, in the Ryelands estate area, marking a troubling case of street violence.

Alex McKenzie, 23, and Alexander Burgmans, 43, confronted their victim, a man in his 30s, as he walked past a friend’s house. Witnesses reported hearing shouts signaling the attack, with one witness stating, “He’s there, get him.” The chaos escalated rapidly when McKenzie struck the victim in the face with a metal bar, causing him to fall and briefly lose consciousness.

The situation became even more severe as Burgmans and another accomplice restrained the victim on the ground, enabling McKenzie to continue the assault with the metal bar. The victim endured four fractures to his facial bones, necessitating surgical intervention for his recovery.

Following the attack, law enforcement initiated a thorough investigation. McKenzie was arrested in South Yorkshire a month later, and both men faced trial at Preston Crown Court. A jury ultimately found them guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent.

During sentencing last week, McKenzie received a prison term of five and a half years, while Burgmans was sentenced to five years. The sentences reflect the court’s serious view of the assault and its implications for community safety.

Detective Constable Beth Andrews of Lancaster CID emphasized the gravity of the attack, stating that such violence on the streets is unacceptable. She affirmed that law enforcement would diligently pursue justice for victims of such crimes.

The public outcry surrounding this case underscores a growing concern about safety in local communities. Authorities continue to encourage residents to report any instances of violence, assuring them that investigations will be pursued vigorously to hold offenders accountable.
