Justice Demanded for 13-Year-Old Autistic Boy Left with Broken Jaw After Brutal Robbery in Harlem

Harlem, New York – A 13-year-old boy diagnosed with autism suffered a broken jaw after being attacked by three teenagers who allegedly sought to steal his sneakers, leading to outrage from his family and community.

The incident unfolded last week as Akai Santana was returning home from school. On the corner of 134th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, a group of teens surrounded him, physically assaulting him before making off with his Yeezy sneakers and Nike mask. The violence left Akai with a broken jaw in two locations, necessitating the insertion of a permanent metal plate. Additionally, he lost two front teeth, significantly impacting his self-esteem and sense of independence.

Maritza Santana, Akai’s mother, expressed her anguish over the attack, struggling to reconcile her feelings of love for her son and anger towards the assailants. “What they did wasn’t right. But I love them. No matter what. They’re still a child of God. I’m going to cry. It’s emotional,” she said, caught between a desire for justice and the instinct to forgive.

Since the attack, Akai has been placed on a liquid diet as doctors assess the extent of his injuries and whether additional procedures will be required. The traumatic encounter has left him fearful to venture outside alone, a stark contrast to his previous independence. “At first, he would love to go outside by himself, but now he has to go out with his sisters,” his mother noted, highlighting the impact of the assault on his daily life.

In the aftermath of the assault, authorities detained two suspects aged 15 and 16 shortly after it occurred. Law enforcement officials reported that the attack was recorded and shared on social media, which may have played a crucial role in the rapid identification and arrest of the assailants. Detectives are currently working to locate at least one additional attacker believed to be involved in the incident.

Community members are rallying around the Santana family, calling for greater awareness and action against youth violence. In light of the attack, many are pressing for initiatives aimed at teaching empathy and respect among young people to prevent such incidents.

As Akai continues his recovery, his family hopes for a resolution that brings accountability while also advocating for compassion and understanding. The incident has not only affected Akai and his family but has resonated throughout the Harlem community, igniting discussions about safety and support for vulnerable individuals.
