RICHMOND, Va. – In a tragic incident, a K-9 named Rivan met a heroic end while protecting a correctional officer during a violent attack involving suspected gang members in Virginia. The 5-year-old Belgian Malinois bravely intervened and was fatally injured despite attempts to save him, as he was violently stabbed and kicked by inmates affiliated with the notorious MS-13 gang at Sussex I State Prison.
Corrections Officer Kharmishia Phillip Fields and Rivan were on duty in the area and swiftly responded to the assault, successfully halting the attack and ensuring the safety of those involved. While Rivan suffered injuries during the incident, Phillip Fields, a dedicated four-year veteran of the department, emerged unscathed due to the K-9’s courageous actions.
Director Chad Dotson of the Virginia Department of Corrections expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Rivan but emphasized that his sacrifice was not in vain. The K-9 gave his life to protect others, displaying unwavering loyalty and dedication to his duty.
