Kenner SWAT Standoff Ends with Suspect Dead and 3 Cops Injured

Kenner, Louisiana – A suspect is deceased, and three Kenner police officers are in recovery after a SWAT standoff on Sunday. The Kenner Police Captain, Michael Cunningham, reported that all three injured officers are in stable condition, with two of them already released from the hospital.

During the incident, Kenner Police attempted to apprehend Matthew Lathers for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery and attempted murder. Despite their efforts, a SWAT robot was disabled, leading to an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the injury of the officers.

Following the shootout, the Kenner SWAT team withdrew from the scene, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) SWAT team took over. Sheriff Joe Lopinto stated that Lathers continued to fire at law enforcement upon their arrival, prompting an exchange that ended with Lathers being fatally shot by a JPSO sniper.

The confrontation began when Lathers reportedly shot two individuals in a car outside a residence. Authorities believe Lathers mistook the victims, who were attending a nearby church service, for police officers, resulting in the tragic incident. One of the bystanders is currently in critical condition.

Among the injured officers, one was struck in the midsection, narrowly missing vital organs, while the others sustained injuries to their arm and leg. The escalation of events underscores the risks law enforcement officers face during high-stakes operations.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the standoff, officials continue to investigate the incident to shed light on the sequence of events leading to the violent confrontation. The tensions and dangers associated with police work highlight the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of officers and civilians alike.
