Lawsuit: CK Mart Gas Station Accused of Being a Crime Hub Following Deadly Shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The estate of Deshawn Carroway, who was fatally shot at a gas station in Richland County this summer, has initiated legal action against the establishment’s parent company. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed against CK Acquisitions, LLC, which operates CK Mart on Broad River Road, where the incident occurred on July 2.

According to the lawsuit, CK Mart has a history of violent incidents, which the estate argues contributes to a climate of fear in the surrounding community. The complaint highlights multiple incidents of fatal shootings and drug-related overdoses on the premises, alleging that the gas station has become a dangerous hub for criminal activity. Residents have reportedly expressed their concerns over the establishment, citing a reluctance to frequent the area after dark due to its notoriety.

The lawsuit outlines the circumstances leading to Carroway’s death, which involved a confrontation between him and the alleged shooter at the gas station. Following a heated argument, the shooter returned to a vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and shot Carroway multiple times, resulting in his death.

Two individuals, Desmond Coleman and Gregory Etheredge, have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting. Both suspects are currently detained at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

The complaint also references previous violent incidents at CK Mart, including a 2021 shooting that claimed the life of another individual. That incident had also resulted in legal action against the establishment, underscoring a pattern of violence associated with the gas station over the years.

As the case proceeds, it raises critical questions regarding the responsibilities of business owners to ensure public safety at their establishments. Legal experts emphasize that plaintiffs in wrongful death suits must demonstrate that the business’s negligence directly contributed to the violent events.

Community members continue to voice their concerns over safety at CK Mart. There are calls for improved security measures to protect patrons and neighborhood residents, as well as a reevaluation of the gas station’s role as a fixture in the area.

The tragic events surrounding Carroway’s death have fueled discussions on broader issues of crime and safety in Columbia, prompting local officials and community leaders to consider measures to address the underlying problems contributing to violence in the area.
