Louisville, Kentucky – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has officially concluded its investigation into the tragic mass shooting that took place at Old National Bank in downtown Louisville in April 2023.
According to ATF Special Agent Shawn Morrow, the rifle used in the shooting has been dismantled, marking the end of the ATF’s extensive inquiry. The findings of the ATF align with those of the Louisville Metro Police Department, which released a comprehensive 64-page report in November 2023 shedding light on the incident that claimed the lives of five individuals.
In an effort to prevent any further harm, the ATF ensures that all firearms involved in their investigations are permanently destroyed. This process involves the use of industrial machines to shred the firearms into minuscule pieces, followed by a third destruction and eventual sale of the metal for scrap.
The shooter had lawfully purchased the rifle merely six days prior to the fatal shooting from a local firearms dealer. Tragically, the rampage resulted in the deaths of five bank employees at Old National Bank on Main Street in downtown Louisville, devastating the community and leaving lasting scars.
Among the fallen were Joshua Barrick, a dedicated senior vice president; Deana Eckert, an esteemed executive administrative officer; Tommy Elliott, another senior vice president; Juliana Farmer, a valued loan analyst; and Jim Tutt, a respected commercial real estate market executive. Their loss reverberated throughout the city, serving as a grim reminder of the fragility of life.
Officer Nick Wilt, who bravely rushed towards the scene with his fellow officer Cory Galloway, sustained critical injuries during the tragic event. Thankfully, Wilt is now on the path to recovery, with his family reporting encouraging progress as he continues to heal at home. The incident stands as Louisville’s deadliest mass shooting since 1989, when a former employee fatally shot seven individuals at Standard Gravure, highlighting the urgent need for stronger gun control measures.
As the city mourns the loss of these innocent lives, the investigation’s conclusion brings a sense of closure while also underscoring the importance of vigilance in preventing such senseless violence in the future.
