Man with Lengthy Criminal Record Held Without Bail for Violent MBTA Station Attack

Boston, Massachusetts – A South Boston man is being held without bail for his alleged involvement in a violent attack at an MBTA station on June 4. Thomas Digaetano, 42, faces charges of assault to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The defendant, with a significant criminal record, has five open cases in South Boston for offenses including assault and battery, strangulation, and kidnapping, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden.

Digaetano was reportedly observed engaging in a physical altercation with a victim near the Ellery Street entrance of Andrew Station T stop around 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Police stated that he fled towards Southampton Street before being apprehended.

The 41-year-old male victim sustained multiple lacerations to his head and abdomen, requiring transport to Boston Medical Center. Authorities have not confirmed any prior connection between Digaetano and the victim. Surveillance footage from the incident allegedly shows Digaetano attacking the victim with a knife, while a second suspect in a black T-shirt, tan shorts, and a black backpack can be seen kicking and punching the victim on the ground.

DA Hayden condemned the violence, describing the incident as intolerable and a violation of public transportation users’ expectations of safety. Digaetano is scheduled for a dangerousness hearing on June 11. Anyone with information on the second suspect or the stabbing is urged to contact Boston Police.
