Fordyce, Arkansas – A tragic mass shooting at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas has left a community in shock. The devastating incident resulted in the death of four people and the injury of nine others, including a valiant 23-year-old nurse who selflessly risked her life to help a victim.

Colonel Mike Hagar, the director of the Arkansas State Police, commended the brave actions of the nurse, Callie Weems, who put herself in harm’s way to assist others during the chaotic scene at the grocery store. Despite the danger, Weems chose to stay and provide aid, highlighting her exceptional courage and dedication to helping those in need.

The suspect, Travis Eugene Posey, 44, was apprehended after a confrontation with law enforcement officers. Posey now faces multiple charges of capital murder in connection to the shooting. The tragedy unfolded when Posey unleashed gunfire in the store’s parking lot and then proceeded to open fire inside the Mad Butcher grocery store.

Weems, a beloved member of a family of nurses, was known for her compassion and passion for horseback riding, a trait that earned her the nickname “Woodrow.” Her father, Tommy Weems, fondly remembered her as always being willing to lend a helping hand, a sentiment echoed by many who knew her.

The other victims of the senseless attack have been identified as Shirley Taylor, 62, Roy Sturgis, 50, and Ellen Shrum, 81. The survivors, ranging from 20 to 65 years old, are now recovering from their injuries, with two of them being law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.

Colonel Hagar praised the swift and courageous response of the six officers who confronted the shooter, emphasizing their bravery in the face of danger. He described the incident as a stark contrast between the worst and best aspects of humanity, commending the officers for putting themselves at risk to protect civilians.

As authorities continue their investigation, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Hagar characterized the attack as a “completely random, senseless act,” noting that Posey was armed with a shotgun and a pistol during the rampage, leaving a trail of devastation that has deeply impacted the Fordyce community.
