Minister Condemns Violent Attack on Teacher at Vere Technical High School

MAY PEN, Jamaica – The Education Minister of Jamaica, Fayval Williams, has expressed strong disapproval of the violent attack on a teacher at Vere Technical High School in Clarendon. The incident led to the suspension of classes at the school after teachers protested against the decision of the police to press charges against a female teacher who was assaulted on school grounds by relatives of a student.

Principal Oneil Lewin disclosed to Radio Jamaica News that the teachers participating in the sit-in have refused to resume classes until the Ministry of Education investigates the matter. Minister Williams stated that her Ministry is fully dedicated to supporting the affected teacher and enhancing school security in light of the unfortunate incident.

A meeting is scheduled between the Ministry, teachers of Vere Technical High School, and the Jamaica Teachers’ Association to address the concerning issue. Minister Williams emphasized the ongoing efforts of the Education Ministry to implement initiatives aimed at reducing school violence and urged for cooperation from parents, guardians, and community members.

The Minister expressed disappointment at the involvement of a parent in the violent act, underlining the importance of collaboration among parents, teachers, students, and community members to combat school violence. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for a united front in creating a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
