PONTIAC, Mich. – The mother of a student who tragically died in the Oxford High School shooting in November 2021, expressed relief and gratitude following the conviction of Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the shooter, in a historic decision. Nicole Beausoleil, the mother of Madisyn Baldwin, emphasized the importance of accountability and described the verdict as a monumental moment in history.
Following a unanimous jury verdict, Jennifer Crumbley was found guilty of four counts of manslaughter, one for each of the students killed in the shooting. This landmark decision marked the first time a parent in the U.S. has been held criminally responsible for a mass shooting committed by his or her child.
Nicole Beausoleil praised the verdict, stating that it sets a new precedence for the justice system. She expressed her gratitude for the jury’s thorough examination of the evidence and the red flags leading up to the tragic day, calling it a significant step forward in seeking justice for the victims.
Beausoleil also took the opportunity to thank the public for their continued support and remembrance of the victims killed in the tragedy, including her daughter Madisyn Baldwin, as well as Tate Myre, Hana St. Juliana, and Justin Shilling, with seven others wounded.
Jennifer Crumbley now faces up to 15 years in prison on each count and remains held on bond. Her husband, James Crumbley, has also been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, pleading not guilty and awaiting trial next month.
Meanwhile, their son, Ethan, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty as an adult to murder, terrorism, and other crimes. He was sentenced in December to life in prison without parole.
The jury foreperson in the trial revealed on NBC’s “TODAY” show that the jury was moved by evidence showing that Crumbley failed to safely secure the gun used in the shooting, as well as by journal entries made by the shooter.
As the families of the victims continue to navigate their grief and seek closure, the conviction of Jennifer Crumbley represents a significant milestone in holding individuals accountable for their role in mass shootings.
