HOUSTON, Texas — A tragic incident stemming from a case of mistaken identity has left a young man dead and a community in shock. On November 21, 2022, officers discovered that Laderrick Dixon Jr. mistakenly confronted Kevin Fowler, believing him to be his girlfriend’s boyfriend, leading to a fatal shooting.
Dixon, facing murder charges for the death of the 23-year-old Fowler, knocked on the wrong door at a short-term rental on Orebo Street in Acres Homes. According to investigators, Dixon and an accomplice sought out Dixon’s girlfriend, but their lack of awareness about the rental’s layout led them to Fowler, who was just hanging out with friends.
Fowler’s cousin, Portia Patterson, mourned his loss, stating, “He was just going to hang out, to get away.” As Fowler attempted to leave with his friends, Dixon and the other man reportedly opened fire on their vehicle, striking Fowler in the head. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
Fowler’s sister, Stormi Gayle, expressed her heartbreak over the senseless violence. “He didn’t have any kids and was only 23 years old. It’s just not fair,” she said. She described her brother as someone passionate about cutting hair and trading cars, painting a picture of a promising young life abruptly cut short.
Prior to the shooting, Dixon was arrested on Saturday for violating his deferred adjudication agreement related to a separate weapons incident. Investigators quickly connected him to Fowler’s murder and subsequently filed two additional charges against him. Authorities are also seeking information about a second suspect, described as a young, thin Black man.
The community is questioning the motives behind the shooting, with Patterson lingering on the horrifying aspect of the violence. “What would possess you to just open fire? Like, why?” she pondered, echoing the disbelief many feel in the wake of this tragedy.
Authorities urge anyone with information related to the case to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. The investigation continues as the focus remains not only on seeking justice but also on understanding the circumstances that led to such a devastating outcome.
