Murder Charges Filed Against Teen for Carnival Shooting That Left an Infant and Pregnant Woman Dead

West Valley City, Utah — A 16-year-old boy faces four murder charges after allegedly opening fire at a local carnival, resulting in three fatalities, including an infant and a pregnant woman. The incident, which unfolded late Sunday at WestFest, has drawn attention to increasing violence in the area.

Authorities reported that five individuals, including two teenagers, were shot during the event, which celebrates the diversity and establishment of West Valley City. The violent weekend was compounded by a previous shooting linked to a protest against gang culture held the day before.

Among the deceased was an 8-month-old boy, killed alongside 41-year-old Fnu Reena, who was eight weeks pregnant at the time of her death. Reena had just completed a medical appointment hours before the attack, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill noted. The primary target of the shooting was identified as 18-year-old Hassan Lugundi, a resident of West Valley City, according to police affidavits.

In a disturbing revelation, the teenager allegedly told investigators he was confident of his aim, insisting he only targeted specific individuals and claimed he did not hit the child. The infant, who was in a stroller with a twin sibling, suffered a fatal wound to the head, while the twin was unharmed.

In addition to the infant and Reena, two teenagers — a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl — were injured, sustaining gunshot wounds to their arms. Another pregnant woman was hurt while attempting to escape the scene by climbing over a fence.

The accused faces significant charges beyond murder, including nine counts of felony firearm discharge leading to serious bodily harm. While each murder count carries the potential for life imprisonment or the death penalty if the offender were an adult, juveniles are exempt from such penalties under current laws.

Prosecutors have requested that the teenager remain in custody without bail until further hearings, as court records did not indicate whether he has legal representation. The firearm involved, a 9 mm Taurus G2C handgun, was reported stolen in Louisiana prior to the incident.

Police have connected the shooter to the Titanic Crip Society, a gang with rival affiliations to the Bloods, of which Lugundi was reportedly a member. The shooting has sparked concerns about the intersection of gang violence and public safety in the community.

WestFest, which drew around 10,000 attendees over the weekend, was winding down when the gunfire erupted, with thousands still present. An earlier, unrelated shooting tied to the “No Kings” protest on Saturday involved another violent altercation, in which a man affiliated with peacekeeping efforts fired upon an individual threatening demonstrators, resulting in a bystander’s death.

As authorities continue to investigate this tragic event, residents are left grappling with the broader implications for community safety and the need for interventions addressing gang-related violence.
