Newark, Del. — A tight-knit Delaware community is expressing gratitude for three police officers who played a crucial role in preventing a potential tragedy at the University of Delaware. Officers First Class Christopher Hewlitt, Nathan Jupiter, and Jay Scerbo have been hailed as heroes for their quick actions, which authorities say thwarted a violent attack.
The officers were honored during a ceremony where New Castle County Executive Marcus Henry praised their swift intervention. “The outstanding work of these officers has saved numerous lives,” he said, emphasizing the gravity of the situation they helped avert.
On November 24, while on routine patrol, the officers discovered a car with its lights on in a park after hours. Officer Jay Scerbo recounted their decision to investigate further. “We saw the vehicle and felt it necessary to check it out,” he explained.
Inside the abandoned car, the officers found a loaded handgun modified to resemble a submachine gun, body armor, and a notebook containing detailed plans for an attack on the campus. The suspect, identified as Luqmaan Kahn, was apprehended at the scene.
Delaware House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown spoke at the recognition event, acknowledging the officers’ efforts. “We could have faced a dire situation, but thanks to your vigilance, we didn’t,” she stated.
Police Chief Patrick Ogden of the University of Delaware commended the officers for their decisive actions. “Your instincts and thorough investigation are commendable,” he said, highlighting the dramatic difference their intervention made.
The officers received commendations from both the Delaware State House and Senate, celebrating their exemplary service.
