Phoenix Police Searching for Suspect in Fatal Bus Stop Shooting

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Phoenix police are searching for answers in the shooting death of 37-year-old Paul Lopez Jr. at a bus stop over the weekend. Lopez’s family and loved ones gathered for a vigil on May 8 to remember him and seek justice for his untimely death.

According to Lopez’s wife, Veronica Altamirano, the tragic incident occurred as Lopez was waiting at the bus stop near 51st Avenue and Indian School Road, preparing to head to work on the evening of Sunday, May 5. An argument escalated into a shooting, leaving Lopez fatally wounded. Police have been investigating leads but have yet to make any arrests in connection with the case.

Altamirano recalled the heartbreaking moment when detectives informed her of her husband’s fate the following day, casting a shadow over what should have been a day of celebration. On what would have been their third wedding anniversary, Altamirano spoke of the deep love she shared with Lopez, a love she believes can never be replicated.

Describing Lopez as a devoted provider for their family, Altamirano emphasized the senselessness of his death, stating, “Nobody deserves to be shot and killed, murdered like that.” She expressed her determination to see justice served for her husband, as she navigates the grief of his loss.

Phoenix police revealed that a 911 caller reported hearing gunshots at the bus stop, prompting multiple individuals to flee the scene. Altamirano detailed the harrowing sequence of events, recounting how Lopez was shot in the finger before being struck in the head and back as he attempted to escape the altercation.

As the investigation unfolds, Altamirano remains resolute in her quest for justice, declaring, “Justice will be served, and I don’t care if it’s a week from now or ten years from now.” She urged anyone with information to come forward, directing them to contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with Lopez’s funeral expenses, offering a way for the community to support his grieving family during this difficult time. Altamirano continues to honor Lopez’s memory through the candlelight vigil held in his name, keeping his spirit alive while seeking answers in his tragic passing.
