Paris, France – French authorities have launched a massive manhunt following a violent ambush on a prison convoy in Normandy. The incident resulted in the death of two guards and the injuring of three others as gunmen attacked the vehicle transporting a prisoner. The attack, described as rare for the region, occurred as the convoy was moving the inmate from court to a nearby prison, according to French Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti.
Video footage from the scene captured a black SUV engulfed in flames after colliding with a prison van near a motorway toll booth. The individuals responsible, wearing hoodies and carrying what appeared to be long rifles, are currently at large, as confirmed by national police.
The French national prosecutor leading the investigation revealed that the escapee, identified as Mohamed Amra, had a significant criminal history with a total of 13 convictions, mainly for theft-related offenses. Amra was being transported after a court hearing where he was found guilty of burglary and was also under investigation for a kidnapping case resulting in death.
In response to the incident, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin mobilized the national gendarmerie and hundreds of police officers to conduct a thorough manhunt. Roadblocks and perimeters have been established in the search for the fugitives, while forensic experts are meticulously examining the crime scene for evidence.
During a press conference, Paris state prosecutor Laure Beccuau provided further details, linking two burnt out vehicles discovered to the attackers, who used them during the attack. The prosecutor emphasized that uncovering the root cause of this “outburst of violence” is a top priority for the authorities.
President Emmanuel Macron expressed determination to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served in the name of the French people. The intense investigation continues as law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to track down the individuals responsible for the deadly ambush and the escape of the convicted criminal.
