Rampage: Man Charged in Rockford Stabbing Attack Resulting in 4 Deaths and 7 Injuries

ROCKFORD, Ill. – A tragic attack in Rockford has led to the death of four individuals, including the suspect’s childhood friend and a teenager, as announced by the county prosecutor. The victims have been identified as 15-year-old Jenna Newcomb, 23-year-old Jacob Schupbach, 49-year-old Jay Larson, and 63-year-old Romona Schupbach. The violent incident, which began around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, resulted in injuries to seven other individuals, some of whom were stabbed, while three teenage girls were beaten with a baseball bat during the attack.

Christian Ivan Soto, 22, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of attempted first-degree murder, and three counts of home invasion in connection with the attack. Soto, who is currently held in the Winnebago County Jail without bond, confessed to the killings in an interview with detectives, claiming that he was under the influence of a substance that led to his rampage.

According to Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley, Soto embarked on a violent spree lasting 20 minutes, starting with the fatal stabbings of his childhood friend Jacob and Romona Schupbach. He then proceeded to fatally stab and run over mail carrier Jay Larson with his pickup truck before breaking into multiple homes and attacking three teenage girls with a bat, resulting in the death of Jenna Newcomb. Two more victims were hospitalized with serious injuries before Soto was apprehended by the police.

The community in Rockford was left in shock and mourning as news of the tragedy spread, prompting calls for police and paramedics at multiple scenes across the area.
