Rikers Island Guards Brutally Attacked by Inmates in Separate Incidents: Exclusive Coverage

New York City – Two correction officers at Rikers Island were violently attacked by inmates in separate incidents on Monday, resulting in serious injuries to the guards. The first attack took place around 1 p.m. at the George R. Vierno Center, where an officer intervened in a gang fight involving about 10 inmates. Despite attempts to stop the brawl, the inmates continued to fight and even struck the officer with a food pan lid, causing a deep cut on his hand.

In another incident at the Robert N. Davoren Complex around 6:15 p.m., a female correction officer was punched in the face by an inmate despite using pepper spray. The officer suffered facial and sinus fractures, along with a cut under her eye. The attack was carried out by an alleged gang member facing murder charges.

The violent assaults on correction officers have been on the rise at Rikers Island, with union officials reporting around 150 attacks since December 2023. Concerns have been raised about the safety of officers as a new law restricting the use of solitary confinement is set to take effect. Mayor Eric Adams had vetoed the bill three months ago, warning of increased risks for inmates and staff, but the City Council overrode the veto.

The incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by correction officers at Rikers Island, with calls for stronger measures to protect against inmate violence. The decision to limit the use of solitary confinement has raised concerns about the safety of officers and inmates alike, with fears that the situation could worsen with the new restrictions in place.

Union President Benny Boscio emphasized the need for immediate action to address the growing violence and protect those working in the city’s jails. The attacks underscore the complex issues surrounding prison safety and the ongoing efforts to improve conditions for both officers and inmates at Rikers Island.
