Sentencing Looms for Austin Thompson, Teenager Behind Gruesome 2022 Shootings in Raleigh

Raleigh, North Carolina — An 18-year-old man who fatally shot five people, including his younger brother, during a violent rampage in October 2022 is set to be sentenced on Tuesday. Austin Thompson, who was 15 at the time of the shootings, pleaded guilty in January to multiple charges, including five counts of first-degree murder.

Thompson’s decision to plead guilty was motivated by a desire to spare the victims’ families the trauma of a trial, according to a court filing. The intense nature of the crime has left a community grappling with profound loss and fear.

On the day of the incident, Thompson armed himself with a .22 caliber rifle, targeting his brother in their home shortly after school. Despite the brother surviving an initial gunshot wound, he ultimately succumbed to fatal injuries inflicted by 57 stab wounds, predominantly to his neck.

After committing the first act of violence, Thompson spent the next half hour gathering firearms and ammunition, preparing for further attacks. He changed into camouflage clothing and packed a backpack with survival supplies before leaving the house. This chilling preparation signals a deliberate intent to escalate the situation.

As Thompson exited his home, he encountered two neighbors, Nichole Connors and Lynn Garner, who were about to walk their dogs. Video evidence shows him approaching them and opening fire. Connors and her dog did not survive the attack, while Garner managed to escape and report details about the shooter.

The rampage continued with Thompson fatally shooting Gabriel Torres, a Raleigh police officer on his way to work. In the fray, Mary Marshall, another victim, was killed while trying to rescue her dog that had escaped. Nearby, Susan Karnatz was also gunned down while jogging.

After the series of attacks, Thompson fled into a wooded area. Law enforcement officers, assisted by police dogs, eventually located him. As law enforcement closed in, Thompson shot himself but survived the self-inflicted injury.

Authorities have struggled to identify a clear motive for the violent outburst. Interviews with Thompson’s family and teachers did not provide insights into what prompted the attack. However, investigators discovered he had been researching mass shootings on his electronic devices.

As the community anticipates the sentencing, there is a sense of lingering sorrow and unanswered questions about the events of that day and the factors that led to such a tragic loss of life.
