WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A tragic shooting at the WestFest festival Sunday night has left three people dead, including an 8-month-old infant. The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. at Centennial Park, where attendees had gathered for festivities. Authorities have confirmed the identities of the victims as 41-year-old Fnu Reena and 18-year-old Hassan Lugundi. The name of the infant has not yet been released.
The shooter, a 16-year-old male, opened fire in what investigators describe as a targeted attack on Lugundi. During the shooting, five people were injured, prompting a rapid police response. An officer on the scene fired back but did not hit the suspect, who was apprehended just moments after the incident began.
Initial reports suggested that a verbal altercation between two groups may have led to the gunfire, but police now believe this was not the case. They have characterized the event as chaotic, taking place in a dense crowd of approximately 1,000 to 2,000 people. Investigators are still compiling witness statements to clarify the sequence of events.
According to law enforcement, eyewitnesses reported that Lugundi was likely the intended target of the attack; Reena and the infant were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. Two additional teenagers were also shot but have since been released from medical care and have been deemed uninvolved in the incident.
As investigations continue, police have noted the critical role of quick action by officers who rushed into a potentially dangerous environment. Roxeanne Vainuku, public information officer for the West Valley City Police Department, praised the responding officers for their bravery during this troubling situation. “I am grateful for their swift actions in apprehending the suspect before further harm could be done,” she said.
The officers involved in the shooting are currently restrained from communicating with West Valley City police as part of standard protocol. Their statements will be reviewed once an independent investigation into the incident is finalized.
In response to the traumatic incident, authorities emphasize their commitment to supporting impacted families and witnesses. Police are offering access to victim resources, including counseling services and advocacy support, acknowledging the emotional toll on those who experienced the violence firsthand.
“Our primary focus right now is on the families affected by this tragedy,” Vainuku remarked. “There are no words that can ease their pain right now.”
