Northridge, California — An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot his neighbor on New Year’s Eve in what authorities describe as an act of self-defense during an alleged active shooter incident. The victim, 43-year-old Keith Porter, was reportedly celebrating the holiday when the confrontation occurred.
According to officials, the ICE agent, whose identity has not been disclosed, heard multiple gunshots emanating from inside the apartment complex before stepping outside. There, he encountered Porter, who was armed with a rifle. When Porter reportedly refused to disarm, the agent attempted to fire a warning shot aimed at disarming him, leading to an exchange of gunfire, authorities said.
ICE spokespersons conveyed that the agent responded to what he perceived as an imminent threat. They commended his actions in protecting both himself and others in the vicinity. No injuries were reported among nearby residents during the incident, which led to the LAPD being called to the scene.
Porter’s family and friends, however, contest the characterization of the event. During a vigil held at the apartment complex, they described Porter as merely celebrating and demanded accountability for what they label as an unjustifiable act of violence. Activists from Black Lives Matter were also present, voicing their outrage and calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Melina Abdullah, co-founder of BLM Los Angeles, criticized the notion that the agent’s actions were warranted. “You don’t just get to murder people because you don’t like what they’re doing or how they’re celebrating,” she asserted, emphasizing the need for justice.
Family members shared their grief, with one relative expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Porter, who was a father. They plan to meet with District Attorney Nathan Hochman in hopes of prompting a review of the case.
The investigation remains ongoing, with no arrests made thus far. Community members are rallying for transparency and accountability in the wake of this tragic event, highlighting the broad implications it holds for questions of law enforcement and public safety.
