Shooting Tragedy: 10-Year-Old Girl Fatally Injured in Beech Island Incident

BEECH ISLAND, S.C. — A tragic incident in Aiken County claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl late Wednesday night, prompting an urgent investigation by local law enforcement.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Dorsett-Kenzie Road shortly before midnight. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Lavinia Lowe with a gunshot wound to the head, lying on her bed. Emergency personnel pronounced her dead at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the coroner’s office.

The shooting left significant damage, with multiple bullets striking both the home and a nearby vehicle. Deputies reported at least eight bullet holes visible on the exterior wall of the house, raising serious concerns within the community about safety and violence.

Sheriff Marty Sawyer expressed horror at the loss of such a young life, describing the murder as an especially heinous act. “Any murder is unacceptable, but the murder of an innocent child is the most depraved act possible,” he stated. He assured the community that the sheriff’s office is dedicating all available resources to solve this case and has enlisted support from local, state, and federal agencies.

Residents of the usually tranquil neighborhood were shaken by the sudden violence. Brandi Turner, a nearby resident, detailed her experience on the night of the shooting, recalling the distressing sounds that echoed through the community. “We heard her screaming, and she was like my baby,” she remarked, reflecting the sorrow felt among neighbors grappling with the shocking reality.

An autopsy for Lavinia is scheduled for next week in Newberry. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation aims to identify those responsible and ensure the safety of the community.

This incident is part of a worrying trend in the Central Savannah River Area, where violent crime involving children has escalated in recent years. Local residents fear that innocent lives are being caught in the crossfire of violence that plagues the area.

Recent years have witnessed several heartbreaking cases of children struck by stray bullets during drive-by shootings. These incidents highlight a growing public concern about safety, particularly for young and vulnerable individuals.

As the investigation unfolds, the community is left to reflect on the tragedy while seeking answers and urging an end to the cycle of violence that has claimed too many young lives.
