Shooting Tragedy at Madison School: Father Charged in Connection with Daughter’s Deadly Attack

MADISON, Wis. — A father has been charged with multiple felonies linked to his daughter’s tragic school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School last December, which resulted in the loss of two lives. Authorities reported that Jeffrey Rupnow, 42, was taken into custody early Thursday morning.

Rupnow faces serious charges, including contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of supplying a dangerous weapon to a person younger than 18, each charge punishable by up to six years in prison. He is expected to appear in court for his initial hearing on Friday.

The incident unfolded on December 16, 2024, when Rupnow’s 15-year-old daughter, Natalie, opened fire at the school, killing a teacher and a 14-year-old student before taking her own life. Two additional students were critically injured during the attack. This shooting was one of several recent tragedies linked to youth gun violence.

Investigators have revealed troubling details surrounding the events leading up to the tragedy. According to a criminal complaint, Rupnow informed police that his daughter was deeply affected by their parents’ divorce and had developed an interest in firearms after he had taken her shooting on a friend’s property. He admitted to purchasing two handguns for her and disclosed the access code to his gun safe, which was his Social Security number reversed.

Inside her bedroom, authorities found alarming writings where Natalie expressed extreme disdain for humanity and admitted to seeking revenge through violence. She meticulously planned her attack, even creating a model of the school and drafting a timeline that ended with a chilling note indicating she was “ready 4 death.”

During the investigation, police recovered a 9 mm Glock handgun, linked to her father, from the classroom where the shooting took place, as well as a .22-caliber pistol that was intended as a Christmas gift.

Twelve days post-incident, Jeffrey Rupnow communicated with police, reflecting on his actions and expressing regret over teaching his daughter safe gun handling practices. He urged families to frequently change codes on gun safes, warning that children can easily outsmart security measures, comparable to hacking attempts on bank accounts.

The case has brought attention to the accountability of parents in school shootings. Similar situations have recently emerged in other states, with parents facing charges for their involvement in their children’s violent actions. Notably, the parents of a Michigan school shooter were convicted of involuntary manslaughter in a separate incident.

In this disturbing context, the fallout from the Madison shooting continues to resonate. The victims, Erin Michele West and Rubi Patricia Vergara, have left a profound impact on the affected community, which consists of approximately 420 students at the nondenominational Christian institution.
