Shooting Tragedy Outside Lawrence Bar Claims One Life, Leaves Another Critically Injured Amid Growing Concerns Over Safety

Lawrence, Kansas — A tragic shooting outside a well-known college bar has left one young man dead and another critically injured, prompting community outrage and police investigation. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, claiming the life of 18-year-old Aidan Knowles.

Police responded to reports of gunfire around 2 a.m. at the Jayhawk Cafe, commonly referred to as “The Hawk.” The two friends, identified as Knowles and 16-year-old Brady Clark, were shot on the bar’s patio shortly before closing time. While Knowles succumbed to his injuries at the scene, Clark was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Clark’s parents, Kristin and Chris, described their son and Knowles as innocent bystanders caught in an act of senseless violence. They expressed gratitude for the community’s support during this anguishing time. “Our son suffered critical injuries, and thanks to the tireless efforts of first responders, he survived,” the family shared. “Tragically, his best friend did not, and our hearts are with his family as they grieve this unimaginable loss.”

Knowles’ father, Bobby, took to social media to address the tragedy, stating that his son and his friend were “simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.” He also praised first responders for their professionalism and compassion in the face of the unfolding crisis.

In connection with the shooting, Lawrence police arrested two suspects shortly after the incident. Eighteen-year-olds Caiden Clem and Daitron Daniels have been charged with first-degree murder and other offenses. Clem faces counts of first-degree murder and aggravated assault, while Daniels is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault.

Authorities highlighted that they had previously responded to numerous calls related to the bar, including fights and concerns about underage drinking. Over the past year, police made at least 59 visits to the establishment, in an effort to maintain public safety and ensure compliance with local laws.

In a statement released Monday, the bar’s management expressed their deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to those affected. They confirmed their full cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation unfolds, emphasizing a commitment to the safety of patrons and staff.

As the community grapples with this senseless act of violence, the families of both victims are seeking privacy while dealing with the aftermath. The Lawrence area remains in shock, reflecting on the lives impacted by what authorities are calling a tragic and avoidable event.
