St. Helena Island, S.C. — A mass shooting outside Willie’s Bar and Grill early Sunday left four dead and 16 others wounded, shocking the local community. Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner described the scene as “horrific,” noting that between 500 and 700 people were attending an after-party when gunfire erupted.
Preliminary investigations suggest that two or possibly three assailants engaged in a feud that escalated into violence near the bar’s entrance just before closing time. The chaos sent patrons scrambling for safety, with at least 20 individuals struck by gunfire as the night turned deadly.
The four victims have been identified by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office as A’shan’tek Milledge, 22, of Burton; Amos Gary, 54, of St. Helena; Chiraad Smalls, 33, of Beaufort; and Kashawn Glaze, 22, of Beaufort. Tragically, all were confirmed dead at the scene.
Despite the magnitude of the event, Sheriff Tanner reported that no arrests had been made by Wednesday, emphasizing a troubling reluctance among witnesses to come forward. He indicated that fear of retaliation might be deterring potential informants, a challenge for investigators currently piecing together evidence.
Sheriff Tanner remarked that the violence likely stemmed from online disputes, specifically on social media platforms. He expressed concern over the increasing connectivity of local gangs with national organizations, though he did not confirm this incident as gang-related. “It’s complicated,” he said, elaborating that the feud involved individuals acquainted with each other.
Authorities have dispatched evidence to the State Law Enforcement Division for forensic analysis, while the FBI is working on enhancing video footage related to the incident. In addition, the sheriff’s lab is conducting DNA testing in hopes of uncovering further leads.
Tanner also highlighted a broader issue in the community concerning firearms, mentioning a recent spike in illegal modifications and instances of stolen guns. In the past 18 months, his office has arrested 24 individuals for possession of machine guns, often linked to “switches” that convert standard weapons into fully automatic firearms. He criticized lenient bail amounts that allow those arrested to quickly return to the streets, exacerbating the crisis.
Sheriff Tanner urged anyone with information or footage from the night of the shooting to come forward, either directly or anonymously. As the community grapples with the aftermath, officials are committed to identifying those responsible for this tragedy and rectifying the escalating violence.
The case now stands as a chilling reminder of the dangerous intersections between personal disputes and gun violence, igniting ongoing conversations about public safety and local gang activity. Final charges will be issued pending further evidence, as the investigation into this horrific event continues.
