The incident occurred on Cambie Street, leading to a closure between Smithe and Robson streets as law enforcement responded to what they described as a “serious assault.” Const. Tania Visintin later confirmed that a 911 call alerted authorities to a man chasing people with a knife and a subsequent stabbing incident that occurred shortly before noon.
The victim, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was promptly transported to a hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. The suspect, identified as a 46-year-old male, was taken into custody in close proximity to the scene of the altercation.
Witnesses, including Adrian Crook, a local resident, recounted the chaos unfolding as police gathered statements from bystanders and prepared to conclude their investigation. Crook highlighted the prevalence of “street disorder” in the downtown area, particularly exacerbated since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Residents in the neighborhood had previously been warned about a knife-wielding individual captured on surveillance footage entering an underground parking facility on two separate occasions in previous months. Crook emphasized the importance of vigilance in light of such incidents, despite acknowledging that serious assaults like the one on Wednesday are not a regular occurrence.
Referencing a tragic event in March 2023 where Paul Schmidt was fatally stabbed outside a Starbucks in the vicinity, Crook underscored the lingering concerns surrounding violence in public spaces. Schmidt had been advocating against vaping near his young child when the fatal altercation took place.
