Strangulation Horror: County Durham Man Jailed for Brutal Attack on Partner Leading Her to Write ‘Help’ in Car Window

Bishop Auckland, England — A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for a violent assault against his former partner that left her fearing for her life. Irmantas Zilinskas was involved in a brutal incident where he strangled the victim with a towel during a night of excessive drinking.

The violent episode took place in Zilinskas’s County Durham home after the couple had spent the day socializing. Upon their return, an argument escalated, leading to Zilinskas’s alarming behavior. In a chilling account presented in court, it was revealed that Zilinskas restricted the woman’s breathing by covering her mouth and nose, resulting in her desperate struggle for air.

Witnesses heard that he mockingly told her, “no one is coming for you,” as she gasped for help. The attack intensified when he used a towel as a ligature around her neck, demonstrating a complete disregard for her safety. During the ordeal, the victim attempted to escape his grasp and even feigned an epileptic seizure in hopes of being released. However, this tactic led only to a fainting spell, leaving her vulnerable to further violence.

After a lengthy struggle, the victim managed to escape momentarily and was hurt as she kicked off a mirror in her attempts to flee. It was only after Zilinskas noticed her injury that he decided to drive her to the hospital, stopping at a gas station along the way. Surveillance footage from the station captured her frantically writing “help” on the misty car window before she ran toward a police officer for assistance.

Following the assault, Zilinskas faced charges of intentional strangulation and suffocation. During the sentencing hearing at Durham Crown Court, he expressed remorse for his actions, with his defense attorney noting that he had no prior offenses and had led a generally stable life. The defense portrayed him as a hardworking individual who intended to get help for his partner, despite the horrifying nature of the attack.

Judge Advocate Thomas Mitchell condemned Zilinskas’s behavior as a “terrible and violent assault, aggravated by drink.” He was sentenced to 36 months in prison and subjected to a lifelong restraining order to ensure the victim’s safety.

This incident highlights the alarming prevalence of domestic violence and its catastrophic effects on victims. As the court proceedings concluded, the focus remained on the importance of raising awareness about such issues in society, underlining the need for resources and support for those escaping abusive relationships.
