Suspects in Fatal Shooting of NYPD Officer in Queens Identified with Lengthy Records

New York City, New York – Authorities in New York City have identified the suspects involved in the fatal shooting of 31-year-old NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller during a traffic stop in Queens. The suspected shooter, 34-year-old Guy Rivera, has a history of at least four prior arrests, while the driver of the vehicle, 41-year-old Lindy Jones, has at least 12 prior arrests, including one in April 2023 for a loaded firearm.

During a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed concern over Rivera’s criminal past, highlighting a previous gun charge that resulted in less than a year of incarceration before being back on the streets. The incident underscores the challenges posed by repeat offenders and the impact on public safety.

The tragic event unfolded when Diller and another officer were conducting a routine traffic stop in Far Rockaway, Queens as part of the NYPD Critical Response Team. A situation escalated when the suspect in the passenger’s seat refused to comply with officers’ instructions and aimed a gun at them, leading to a fatal confrontation.

Diller was fatally shot in the torso, just below his bullet-resistant vest, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at Jamaica Hospital. His partner fired at the suspect, hitting him in the back. Rivera, the suspected shooter, was also wounded but is expected to survive.

Before joining the NYPD, Diller had a record of over 70 arrests, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. He leaves behind a wife and a young child, adding a personal tragedy to the broader impact of violence in the community.

Rivera’s criminal history includes previous incarceration for drug-related offenses and assault, raising questions about the justice system’s ability to prevent repeat offenses. The incident marks the first on-duty death of an NYPD officer since the 2022 shootings of Officers Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera, serving as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement personnel.

The investigation into Diller’s killing is ongoing, with officials working to piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting. The community has expressed grief and support for the fallen officer, highlighting the sacrifices made by those dedicated to serving and protecting the public.
