Swissvale Mother and Daughter Murder Case Highlights Detective’s Error in Identifying Shooter

Swissvale, Pennsylvania – Megan Campbell and her 7-year-old daughter, Lyla, were tragically shot to death in their apartment, sparking a homicide investigation. The trial of Kareef Easington, accused of two counts of criminal homicide and tampering with evidence in connection to the deaths, is currently underway.

Homicide Detective Nicole Grimm played a 911 call for the victims’ family to identify the caller. Joan Campbell, Megan’s mother, immediately recognized the voice as Kareef’s with no hesitation. Shawn Campbell, Megan’s brother, also identified the voice on the recording as Kareef’s. However, questions were raised during cross-examination regarding Detective Grimm’s interaction with the Campbells prior to playing the 911 call.

The prosecution has not provided a motive for the crime to the jury. Yet, Joan Campbell testified that her daughter called her the morning she was killed, reporting an incident where Easington had attempted to strangle her the night before. Witnesses from the apartment building testified hearing unusual noises on the morning of the incident, adding to the mystery surrounding the case.

The prosecution also called on Daniel Wolfe, a member of the mobile crime unit with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, who testified about the recovery of firearms and other evidence from the apartment during the investigation. The trial is set to continue, with more evidence and testimonies expected to shed light on the tragic events that unfolded in the Swissvale apartment.

The case has gripped the community, with many eager to see justice served for Megan Campbell and her young daughter. As the trial progresses, more details are expected to emerge, potentially providing closure for the victims’ family and the community at large. The search for truth and accountability in this heartbreaking case continues as the legal proceedings move forward.
