Queens, New York – Austin Amos was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a violent altercation that led to the death of Kutin Gyimah, a 52-year-old taxi driver. The incident occurred after a dispute over an unpaid fare from Manhattan to Far Rockaway in 2022. Amos, along with a group of passengers in the cab, surrounded Gyimah and physically assaulted him. The attack resulted in Gyimah falling and hitting his head on the pavement, rendering him motionless as Amos and the others fled the scene.
District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed her gratitude towards the NYPD and prosecutors for their efforts in bringing Amos to justice. She condemned the brutal beating of Gyimah at the hands of Amos and his accomplices, emphasizing the severity of the crime. Amos, 22, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree in May, leading to his sentencing by Supreme Court Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant to 10 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.
Another individual involved in the incident, Nickolas Porter, also faced consequences for his actions. Porter pleaded guilty to attempted gang assault in the second degree and received a sentencing of two years in prison and three years of post-release supervision in February. The charges outlined the events of August 13, 2022, when Amos and Porter, along with three underage girls, refused to pay for their taxi ride and subsequently attacked Gyimah as he attempted to confront them near Beach 54th Street and Arverne Boulevard.
Surveillance footage of the incident captured the violent confrontation between Gyimah and the group, showing Amos repeatedly punching Gyimah before leaving him unconscious on the ground. Despite Gyimah’s attempts to stand up, Amos struck him in the head, causing him to fall back and ultimately pass away later that day in a local hospital. The tragic outcome of the altercation highlighted the need for justice to be served and accountability to be upheld for all parties involved.
Assistant District Attorney Lauren Reilly led the prosecution of the case with the support of her colleagues, emphasizing the gravity of the charges against Amos and Porter.
