Teen Arrested for Accidental Shooting Death of Recent Graduation Student with AR-15-style Rifle

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A tragic incident unfolded in Franklin as an 18-year-old boy was arrested and charged with criminal homicide for the shooting death of recent high school graduate Lily Basil. The suspect mistakenly believed the AR-15-style rifle he used was unloaded, as detailed in the arrest affidavit.

The Franklin Police Department responded to the shooting at 1417 Hanson Drive on May 25, where Basil was rushed to the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to her right shoulder. Despite efforts to save her, Basil succumbed to her injuries at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

Subsequent investigations led authorities to identify the possible shooter as Matthew Roufail, who reportedly left the scene for the hospital before being taken in for questioning. Roufail admitted to police that he had indeed shot Basil, although he claimed it was unintentional, believing the firearm to be unloaded.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Page High School community is mourning the loss of Basil, described as a kind, respectful, and beloved individual who had recently graduated. The school is planning a memorial service to remember and honor her life, inviting the community to participate in a “Light the Night Memorial” to celebrate the light she brought into their lives.

Basil’s family has requested that arrangements for her celebration of life be shared by the school, with a ceremony scheduled at Rolling Hills Church on Friday, May 31. Furthermore, Page High School is offering counseling support to students and staff in light of the devastating event.

Roufail, the suspect in custody, has been released on a $150,000 bond as the investigation and legal proceedings continue in the aftermath of the tragic shooting. The community remains in shock and mourning, coming together to remember the life and legacy of Lily Basil.
