Tragic Anniversary: Lamar High School Student Remembered One Year after Campus Shooting

Arlington, Texas – Community members in Arlington, Texas, continue to mourn the tragic loss of Lamar High School student Ja’Shawn Poirier, who was fatally shot on campus just weeks before his 17th birthday. As the one-year anniversary of his death approached, family, friends, and educators gathered at the high school to honor his memory.

Poirier’s mother, Rashone Jacob, shared that the past year has been incredibly difficult as she continues to cope with the profound loss of her son. Despite her ongoing grief, Jacob felt compelled to join others in remembering Ja’Shawn on the anniversary of his untimely passing.

On March 20, 2023, Poirier was among a group of students outside Lamar High School when a fellow juvenile student approached with a shotgun, resulting in a fatal shooting. The tragic event shook the community, leaving loved ones grappling with the abrupt loss of a vibrant young life.

“Fondly remembered as ‘forever sixteen,’ Ja’Shawn’s loved ones and peers came together to release balloons in his favorite color, green, as a poignant tribute,” shared those who knew him. Despite the lingering pain, efforts have been made to commemorate his legacy, including the dedication of a plaque within the school premises and the establishment of a scholarship in his honor.

Reflecting on the ongoing support and remembrance of her son, Jacob expressed gratitude for the community’s efforts to keep Ja’Shawn’s memory alive. She acknowledged the lasting impact of not being able to witness milestones like his prom or graduation and urged others never to forget the significance of March 20, 2023.

Following legal proceedings, the juvenile shooter responsible for Poirier’s death was sentenced to 40 years in prison by a judge. Detectives affirmed that there was no prior connection between Poirier and the assailant. An upcoming hearing on the juvenile’s 19th birthday will determine whether he will continue serving his sentence under the Texas Department of Criminal Justice or be considered for probation under specific conditions for reintegration into society.
