Twins Sentenced to Four Years for Brutal Street Attack Captured on CCTV

Stockton, England — Two twin brothers have been sentenced to four years in prison for a brutal assault that left a man unconscious. The attack, which took place on Hartington Road, was captured on surveillance footage and involved a series of violent blows administered by the twins.

Leon Bayat initiated the attack, wielding a pole against the victim before Leon’s brother, Lewis, joined in. According to testimony in Teesside Crown Court, the assault escalated rapidly as Leon struck the man, knocking him to the ground and delivering repeated kicks to his head. Subsequently, Lewis emerged from the residence, contributing to the onslaught with punches and, ultimately, jumping on the victim’s chest while he lay on the ground.

Prosecutor Cainan Lonsdale described the relentless nature of the attack, emphasizing that the twins’ violent actions were not only calculated but also deeply concerning. Following the assault, both brothers attempted to evade capture by changing their clothing and attempting to flee the scene. Law enforcement apprehended them shortly thereafter.

While the victim did not cooperate with the police investigation and did not provide a victim impact statement, the severity of the injuries inflicted was evident in the court’s proceedings. At the time of the incident on April 7, 2022, the Bayat brothers were already under a community order due to a prior offense involving an assault on a police officer at a hotel.

Defending the twins, attorneys highlighted their challenging upbringing, with Jennifer Coxon, representing Leon, noting that he had spent time in foster care. The deep bond between the twins was underscored as they “rely heavily” on one another, reflecting a complicated dynamic that may have contributed to their criminal behavior.

Lewis Bayat, who turned 20 while in custody, had only been 19 at the time of the offense. His attorney, Michele Turner, mentioned his relatively young age in an effort to contextualize his actions. However, Judge Andrew Sutcliffe KC made it clear that the violence displayed was unacceptable, stating, “The victim had serious injuries to his head and other areas of his body.”

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the responsibility individuals have for their actions. The Bayat brothers are now facing years behind bars, a fate that could have been avoided had they made different choices that day.
