Violence Erupts at Joliet Homeless Shelter, 60-Year-Old Victim Hospitalized

Joliet, Illinois – A recent surge of violent incidents involving a 34-year-old homeless man, Omar Mejia, has raised concerns in the community and prompted his return to the Will County Jail. Mejia’s latest attack left a 60-year-old homeless man hospitalized at the Daybreak Shelter after sustaining injuries from the assault, as reported by Joliet police.

According to police statements, Mejia is facing charges related to aggravated battery, battery, and obstructing a peace officer, in addition to aggravated domestic battery. The initial incident dates back to February 27 when Mejia was involved in a violent altercation with a woman in a vehicle at El Ranchito Supermarket on East Cass Street.

Subsequent reports revealed further violent encounters involving Mejia, with the most recent incident occurring at the Daybreak Shelter on April 18. In this instance, Mejia shoved a 60-year-old man to the ground during an argument in the cafeteria, resulting in the victim hitting his head on the floor and requiring medical attention at Ascension St Joseph Medical Center.

Following the altercation at the shelter, officers received another report of disturbance at a warehouse on Maple Street involving Mejia. Despite Mejia’s complaints of a pre-existing injury, law enforcement officers managed to transfer him to Ascension St Joseph Medical Center for evaluation before escorting him to the Will County Adult Detention Facility. Mejia’s pattern of violent behavior has raised alarm within the Joliet community, underscoring the importance of addressing mental health and homelessness issues in the area.
