Jerusalem, Israel — A violent incident involving draft protesters in Jerusalem has drawn strong condemnation from government officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The attack targeted Knesset member Yoav Ben Tzur of the Shas party, who has faced backlash for his role in advancing legislation regarding the conscription of yeshiva students.
Netanyahu described the assault as the actions of a “small, unruly group” and emphasized that violence has no place in political discourse. He called on law enforcement to take decisive action against any attempts to intimidate or harm public officials. “Even in times of disagreement, there is no justification for such behavior,” he stated.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid echoed these sentiments, insisting that the incident challenges the values upheld by Jewish teachings and the state itself. He denounced the attackers, asserting that they should face severe consequences for their actions.
Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the Yisrael Party, labeled the assault as an alarming sign of deteriorating governance. He stressed the need for urgent measures, calling for the arrest of those involved and advocating for a systemic approach to addressing societal separation from state responsibilities, particularly in education and military service.
The attack unfolded as dozens of ultra-Orthodox anti-draft activists blocked Ben Tzur’s vehicle after he visited a synagogue in the Bucharim neighborhood. Protesters reportedly jumped on his car and threw objects at it, prompting a response from Border Police to ensure his safety.
Avigdor Lieberman, leader of Yisrael Beiteinu, also condemned the violence, using the occasion to argue for an equitable legal framework that applies uniformly to all citizens. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for illegal activities, including draft evasion and broader criminal behavior.
In a statement, the Shas movement condemned the incident, labeling it a “serious attack” that goes against the teachings of the Torah and the principles of a God-fearing community. This violence, they asserted, ultimately tarnishes the name of God.
The increasing tensions surrounding the military draft in Israel remain a contentious issue, with many ultra-Orthodox individuals seeking exemptions.
