Violence erupts in Nagpur as mobs clash over Aurangzeb’s tomb: chaos, injuries, and arrests ensue

Nagpur, India – Violent clashes broke out in the Mahal area of central Nagpur, just 2km away from the heavily guarded RSS headquarters. The unrest followed protests demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, which quickly escalated into stone-pelting, arson, and attacks on police officers.

During the chaos, at least 10 anti-riot police commandos, two IPS officers, and two firefighters suffered severe injuries. One constable is currently fighting for their life in a government-run hospital. Mobs torched two earth movers, 40 vehicles, and vandalized police vans, causing widespread destruction.

In response to the violence, police conducted combing operations resulting in the arrest of 50 rioters. The Union home ministry requested a report on the incident, which occurred just two weeks before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to the city.

The clashes were reportedly sparked by rumors of right-wing activists burning effigies of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and a religious ‘chadar’ near Shivaji Putla Square at Mahal gate. Tensions escalated as members of another community gathered, demanding action against those responsible.

As the situation intensified, protesters clashed with police, threw stones, and damaged property. DCP (traffic) Archit Chandak and DCP Niketan Kadam (DCP, Zone 5) sustained injuries while attempting to control the rioters. The fire department also faced challenges as they tried to extinguish burning vehicles amidst the unrest.

Authorities, including CM Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari, issued appeals for calm, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with law enforcement. Central Nagpur MLA Pravin Datke accused “outsiders” of inciting violence and called for strict action against those responsible.

In response to the situation, CP Ravinder Singal mobilized heavy reinforcements, deploying over 1,000 police personnel in central Nagpur. Prohibitory orders were put in place to restrict movement in sensitive areas, including Mahal, Chitnis Park Chowk, and Bhaldarpura. The city remains on edge as authorities work to restore peace and order in the aftermath of the violent clashes.
