TIRUNELVELI, India — A public hearing on the adverse effects of illegal stone quarries turned violent on November 2, when a group of men, allegedly associated with quarry owners, disrupted the meeting and assaulted attendees, including a prominent human rights advocate.
Witnesses reported that approximately 25 individuals, some claiming to be lawyers backing the quarry industry, stormed the event, targeting V. Suresh, National Secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties. Suresh suffered a head injury during the attack, raising concerns about the safety of those who speak out against illegal activities in the region.
The incident sparked outrage from the activist group Arappor Iyakkam, which held a meeting in Chennai to denounce the violence.
