Violence Erupts in Tirunelveli: Quarry Supporters Attack Activists at Public Hearing

TIRUNELVELI, India — A public hearing on the adverse effects of illegal stone quarries turned violent on November 2, when a group of men, allegedly associated with quarry owners, disrupted the meeting and assaulted attendees, including a prominent human rights advocate.

Witnesses reported that approximately 25 individuals, some claiming to be lawyers backing the quarry industry, stormed the event, targeting V. Suresh, National Secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties. Suresh suffered a head injury during the attack, raising concerns about the safety of those who speak out against illegal activities in the region.

The incident sparked outrage from the activist group Arappor Iyakkam, which held a meeting in Chennai to denounce the violence. Coordinator Jayaram Venkatesan emphasized that the assault appeared to be a retaliation for the group’s ongoing efforts to highlight significant illegal mining operations, estimated to involve losses of over ₹600 crore in the Tirunelveli area.

Critics have accused local law enforcement of failing to take appropriate action against the assailants, asserting that the First Information Report (FIR) filed was insufficient and aimed at shielding the perpetrators. Arappor demanded a comprehensive investigation into the violence and called for an end to illegal quarrying activities that threaten both the environment and community safety.

In response to the incident, Arappor vowed to continue documenting citizens’ grievances and advocating for government action to uphold the public’s right to free expression. The organization also urged stronger protections for those who stand against corruption and malfeasance in the quarrying industry.

The attack at the public hearing highlights the growing tensions surrounding mining operations in the region, where residents have long expressed concerns about the detrimental impact of illegal quarries on their lives and livelihoods. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by activists in their pursuit of justice and accountability.

As discussions surrounding quarry regulation intensify, community leaders and organizations are calling for greater transparency and enforcement of environmental protections to ensure that the rights of residents are upheld. The fallout from this violent confrontation may lead to renewed calls for reform and dialogue aimed at addressing the underlying issues plaguing the quarrying sector in Tirunelveli.
