Violent Attacks on Scottish Shopworkers More Than Double in a Year, Survey Shows

Rates of violence against shopworkers in Scotland have more than doubled in the past year, with nearly one in five workers experiencing a violent attack in 2023. A recent report by the retail trade union Usdaw revealed that incidents of violence, threats, and abuse have reached concerning levels, affecting over 5,500 retail staff across the country.

According to the report, 18% of shop workers suffered a violent attack last year, compared to 8% in the previous year and only 5% in 2019 before the onset of the pandemic. The survey also found that nearly half (46%) of shop workers were threatened by customers, and 70% were subjected to verbal abuse on a regular basis.

Incidents of violence and abuse were reported by shop workers in various regions of Scotland. Some described being physically assaulted, threatened, grabbed, or verbally harassed while performing their duties. Instances of customers becoming aggressive over age verification requests or alcohol sales refusals were also highlighted.

Paddy Lillis, Usdaw General Secretary, expressed concern over the escalating levels of violence and abuse faced by retail staff, emphasizing that no one should feel afraid to go to work. Lillis emphasized the need for stronger protections for shopworkers and highlighted the successful campaign for a worker protection law in the Scottish Parliament.

The findings of the report come in the wake of similar reports from industry organizations, including the British Retail Consortium and the Association of Convenience Stores, which have documented a significant increase in incidents of violence, abuse, and shoplifting. The rise in retail crime has not only impacted the safety and well-being of shopworkers but has also resulted in substantial losses for the retail industry.

Efforts are being made to address the issue of retail crime and provide better support for shopworkers. Collaboration with law enforcement agencies such as Police Scotland is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of retail staff. Usdaw remains committed to advocating for the rights and protection of shopworkers, urging for stronger measures to prevent violence, abuse, and theft in the retail sector.
