Vancouver, British Columbia – A horrific and violent attack captured on video has left a longtime Chinatown resident, Angelina, physically and emotionally shattered. The 40-year-old victim was sitting outside her building on Gore Avenue on April 9, chatting with her neighbors when three teenage girls nearby initiated the assault by asking, “What are you looking at?” Despite Angelina’s attempt to deescalate the situation, the girls proceeded to physically attack her, causing serious injuries.
During the attack, Angelina tried to protect her cat, Leonard, who was seen clinging to the bars on the front door, trying to escape the violence. The disturbing incident lasted for several minutes, with bystanders attempting to intervene but also getting attacked. Angelina, who has never felt unsafe in her neighborhood before, now faces physical injuries, including staples in her head, a concussion, and whiplash. Leonard, her cat, also suffered injuries, retreating to hide under the bed and displaying signs of trauma.
Vancouver police confirmed the arrests of the three teenage girls, ages 15, 16, and 17, in the Downtown Eastside following the attack. However, they were later released and are scheduled to appear in court in June. Angelina expressed concern for the well-being of her cat, emphasizing the need for accountability for animal abuse in addition to the violence inflicted upon her.
Chris Livingstone, the executive director for the Vancouver Aboriginal Community Policing Centre, highlighted the escalating violence in the community, attributing it to various factors including mental health issues and intolerance. He noted a disturbing trend of increasing violence and racism in the area, posing a significant safety concern for residents, especially women. Despite a sense of community and belonging, many individuals no longer feel safe navigating the streets due to the prevailing atmosphere of danger and hostility.
