Pahalgam, Kashmir – A tragic terrorist attack claimed the lives of 26 individuals, many of whom were tourists, in Pahalgam, South Kashmir. The attack occurred on April 22, coinciding with a visit from United States Vice President JD Vance to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Saudi Arabia.
The attack is believed to have been orchestrated by The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. This incident marks one of the deadliest attacks in recent memory in the region. Prior to this tragedy, the last significant terrorist strike in Jammu and Kashmir occurred on June 9, 2024, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third-term swearing-in ceremony.
There have been other instances of terrorism targeting civilians and security personnel in the region. In October 2024, a construction site in Ganderbal district was attacked, resulting in the deaths of a local doctor and six migrant workers. The banned outfit TRF claimed responsibility for this attack as well.
The Pahalgam attack serves as a grim reminder of the Chittisinghpura massacre in 2000, where 35 Sikhs were killed by terrorists. Similar atrocities have taken place over the years, including the Pulwama attack of 2019, which resulted in the deaths of 40 Indian Central Reserve Police Force personnel.
Since the year 2000, Kashmir has witnessed several major terror attacks, including incidents targeting minority communities and security installations. These attacks have left a trail of devastation and loss of innocent lives, underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the region.
